Shokudo stands out not just for its vibrant decor and inviting atmosphere, but for the depth of its menu. As someone who’s explored a fair share of Japanese eateries across the UK, I can say this place strikes an impressive balance between tradition and innovation. The sushi rolls are fresh and meticulously crafted - the Salmon & Avocado Roll and Dragon Roll were absolute showstoppers, with rice perfectly seasoned and fish that melts in your mouth.
What sets this venue apart from chain competitors is its kitchen menu. Dishes like the Chicken Katsu Curry, served piping hot with crisp breaded cutlet and velvety sauce, or the warming Tonkotsu Ramen with its rich broth and tender chashu pork, show genuine attention to detail. The portion sizes are generous without being overwhelming - great for sharing or indulging solo.
Service is consistently friendly and attentive, and the open kitchen adds a layer of transparency that reinforces the restaurant’s cleanliness and confidence in quality. Unlike many pan-Asian spots that try to do too much, Shokudo focuses squarely on Japanese cuisine - and it pays off.
One small limitation is that the venue can fill up quickly during dinner hours, so I highly recommend booking ahead. That said, takeaway is also available and neatly packaged for the same level of quality at home.
For sushi enthusiasts and lovers of Japanese comfort food, Shokudo (Tamworth), Japanese Kitchen and Sushi Bar. Menu deserves a place at the top of your list. It’s a standout for Tamworth - a place that’s clearly built on passion, not just profit.
